Pastor's Weekly Message - 2/20/11

February 20, 2011

Well, according to the federal government, the holiday observed on the third Monday in February is officially Washington's Birthday.  But many Americans believe that this holiday is now called "Presidents' Day," in honor of both Presidents Washington and Lincoln, whose birthdays are February 22 and February 12, respectively.  It turns out that whether you honor one or the other or both of these presidents may depend on where you live.  States decide on holidays.  The states are not obliged to adopt federal holidays, which only affect federal offices and agencies.  Students across the country learn about the achievements and contributions of Washington and Lincoln.  What would they say if they knew that President's Day is celebrated with a mattress sale?  What do we do to celebrate this Day?  Do we do anything to celebrate other than enjoy the day off?  What should we do on this day?  President's Day began in 1796, the last full year of Georgia Washington's presidency, to commemorate his birthday.  President's Day history suggests that, from the start, there was confusion about which day in February should be designated.  According to the Julian calendar that was in use at the time of Washington's birth, his birthday was February 11th.  The Gregorian calendar was put into effect in 1752, adding 11 days to the year to bring it into line with the astronomical year, which places his birthday on February 22nd.  During the early years, people celebrated President’s Day on both days in February.  Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12th, and his birthday was originally celebrated in 1865, the first year after he was assassinated.  On that year, both houses of congress met for a memorial address.

The Apostle Paul wrote that we are to pray for our President and those in authority according to I Timothy 2:1-4.

I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions and giving of thanks, be made for all men; For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.  For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; Who will have all men to be saved and come unto the knowledge of the truth.

If all Christians would pray for President Obama it would change this nation.  The scriptures didn’t say that you had to agree with him – it says to pray for him.
